I started vaulting my freshman year of highschool as just a random sport that I thought looked cool, and fun to do. It was extremely hard and I was terrible at it, and I did not take it seriously my first year at all.
My sophomore year I started learning from a private coach, outside of school, it was a huge advantage and it was what really made me fall in love with vaulting.
This past year, my junior year, I have taken it very seriously, and managed to win 1st place in my region c: I didn't do too hot in the state competition, though I've been training hard recently and I am going to be ready to take 1st place at state my senior year!
Now, I live in South Carolina, which is not a huge state for pole vault. I won my region championship only vaulting 12 feet. Currently my Personal Record is 13 feet 6 inches, and I will have to improve about 2 feet by the end of next year to be able to win State. (wish me luck c:)
Now, if you've never seen pole vault in action, check out this video. This is the current world record holder, Bubka, doing his thang.
Final thoughts: Pole vault is extremely hard, does not really do anything towards getting you the ladies, and is a ton of hard work. But it is so much fun :)
